The Kote or arm guards where originally a leather sleeve covering the left arm to protect the arm when using a bow.  In the early development stage kote where little armor other than a leather lining. Around the 10th century a right kote began to emerge, other adaptations like chain maile and iron plates developed with the role of armor being more focused on fighting on the ground. Other improvements came in flexibility as well as more coverage in the wrist and forehand areas.   The Kote can be one of the most complex pieces of Japanese armor. The Kote combined chain maile with plates with leather and cloth.
